Primary Research Group has published The Survey of College Sports Marketing Practices, ISBN 978-1-57440-233-9.

The study is based on detailed data from more than 100 North American colleges on their spending patterns, practices and plans for sports marketing. The study presents highly detailed data on spending for marketing of baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse and other sports, as well as spending data for billboards, web ads, newspaper and magazine print space ads, social media and blogs, website optimization, email, direct mail, television, radio, and other marketing vehicles. The study also looks closely at overall sports marketing budgets, the costs, uses and future of college sports yearbooks, use of ticket promotion consultants, trends in ticket sales and revenues broken out by sport, ticket prices for general non-student admission and student admission and other issues in college sports marketing.

Just a few of the 140+ page study's many findings are that:

  • Across the entire sample, 59.62% of schools have used direct mail in the past year to market sporting events
  • Only 34.62% of schools with an enrollment of 2,000 or fewer students advertise their sports in newspapers, while 81.82% of schools with an enrollment of over 20,000 students do so
  • More than 65% of Division I colleges in the sample use opt-in email to sell tickets or otherwise advertise their sports teams
  • The mean printing cost per sports yearbook printed is $3.37
  • Across the entire sample, 73.47% of schools say that they have been printing fewer sports yearbooks each year
  • 36.59% of colleges surveyed said that basketball ticket sales have increased over the past four years while 56.10% said that they have stayed the same and 7.32% said that they have decreased
