Primary Research Group has published Survey of the Academic Library Role in Course Management Systems, ISBN 978-1-57440-254-4.

 

The study looks closely at how academic libraries present themselves in the course management system, and the role that they play in developing it and training faculty and students to use it. The report gives detailed data on library staff time devoted to the course management system, the role the library plays in information literacy regarding the course management system, the degree to which libraries offer courses through the CMS, and the degree to which library resources such as course reserves, LibGuides and other subject and course guides, inter-library loan requests, and other library services are integrated into the CMS. Data is broken out by size and type of academic library and for different CMS systems.

 

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • Close to 40% of libraries sampled have one or more individuals whose primary job is to oversee the library's role in the course management system
  • Close to 19% of the private colleges in the sample offer courses, seminars, or otherwise provide formal training to students or faculty in how to use the course management system
  • 29% of libraries sampled provide links to specific subject specialists in their course management systems
  • Librarians estimate that only about 25% of faculty members know how to create a link to a library source in their course pages
