Primary Research Group has published Academic Library Reputation Management Practices, ISBN 978-1-57440-264-3.

The study is based on survey data from 40 academic libraries and looks closely at how they monitor, assess, and act to maintain or improve their reputation with key stakeholders such as students, alumni, faculty, and college administration. The report gives extensive data on library public relations practices and on surveying and monitoring techniques and looks at public relations expenditures and strategies to improve the library reputation. The study looks at the dimensions of the library patron surveying and opinion monitoring effort and also at how academic libraries monitor the internet to assess the library's reputation in cyberspace. The report also looks at the use of focus groups and at relations with organizations that rate colleges and libraries.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • 62.5% of the research universities in the sample have a public relations representative or staff
  • 23.1% of the private college libraries in the sample have surveyed alumni to find out what they think of the library
  • Just 38.5% of survey participants have surveyed college administrators, although this is the case for 46.2% of public schools in the sample and 46.7% of those participants with tuitions less than $7,500
  • 10% of libraries at 4-year colleges in the sample use software or web-based services to track the reputation of the library on the internet

The report is available in print and PDF format directly from Primary Research Group for $62.00. Primary Research Group reports are also available form major book and research report distributors.
