Primary Research Group has published The Survey of Law Firm Blogging Practices, ISBN 978-1-57440-271-1.

The 80-page report presents data and commentary on the use of blogs by law firms in the USA, Canada, and the UK. It includes data on the number of blogs firms maintain, their rate of growth, frequency of posting, policies on guest posting, policies on maintenance of personal blogs, assessment of readership metrics, blog marketing strategy, firm policies on training attorneys for blogging, oversight and evaluation of the blogging effort, use of video in blogs, translation of blogs into foreign languages, and other issues in law firm blogging efforts. Survey participants give their advice on their experiences with consultants and blogging platforms and share their experiences on best practices in developing, nurturing, marketing and assessing effective law firm blogs.

The study is based on data and commentary from 27 law firms, predominantly larger ones. Data is broken out by size of firm (less than 20 partners, 20-50 partners, 50-85 partners, and 85+ partners, with a mean of 190), by the type of client that accounts for most firm revenue (individuals, small & medium size business, major corporations), and by other useful criteria.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • The firms in the sample maintained a mean of 4.32 blogs with a median of 2 and a range of 0 to 28
  • 60% of firms serving mostly major corporations as their primary clientele offer some form of blogging training to their attorneys
  • The US-based firms in the sample increased the number of blogs that they publish by 34% in 2013
  • Only about 16% of firms tracked guest posts made by its bloggers on blogs other than those maintained by the firm itself
  • 32% of firms sampled use Facebook to promote their blogs

The study is available directly from Primary Research Group and also from major distributors of books and research reports. Print and PDF versions are available for $125.00.
