Primary Research Group has published College Sports Arena Renovation Benchmarks, ISBN 978-1-57440-277-3.

This 310-page study is based on data from 30 college sports arenas, about half of which are Division I colleges. The report looks closely at how these colleges have renovated their sports arenas and what their plans are for the future. The study helps college sports planners and their suppliers to answer questions such as: What has been the economic impact of arena renovations? What percentage of colleges have a line item in their capital budget for their arenas? How much have colleges spent on arena renovations and what will they spend in the near future? What are they renovating? Seating? Playing surfaces? Locker rooms? VIP fan facilities or luxury boxes? Stadium seating? Weight rooms? Stadium lighting or scoreboards? In-stadium video?

The study even provides data on recent and planned changes to halls of fame and in-stadium museums, stairwells, landscaping, air conditioning and heating, office space, and other facets of the modern college sports arena. Data is broken out separately by many variables, such as for Division I and Divisions II & III, as well as for public and private colleges, stadium seating capacity, and other variables.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • The median cost of the last stadium renovation for colleges in the sample was $1 million, though the mean was $6.4 million.
  • Three participants (10.7%) have renovated the arena's museum or hall of fame in the last five years. All three are Division I schools with arenas built since 1970.
  • 62.5% of colleges with sports arenas that seat more than 10,000 have a line item in their capital budget designated for the sports arena.
  • Over the last three years, the schools in the sample spent a mean of $72,333 on new carpeting, tiling, and other flooring or floor repairs in the arena.
  • The most spent on locker room refurbishment over the past five years by a single college was $1.8 million.
  • The average marginal cost of staging a basketball game in an arena in the sample--including the cost of personnel, utilities, insurance, and other marginal costs associated with game day--is $4,853. "Marginal costs" do not include fixed costs that might be incurred if no game were being held.
