Primary Research Group has published The Survey of Academic Libraries, 2014-15 Edition, ISBN 978-1-57440-293-3.

The study looks at trends in staffing, salaries, budgets, materials purchasing, technology use and more in academic libraries.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • 37.5 percent of all libraries in the sample report that spending on video resources such as films, DVDs, film downloads via the web, and other video-streaming technologies has declined over the past two years.
  • A third of all survey participants have purchased iPads or other such devices in order for their patrons to read e-books. This practice is most common among the four-year BA- or MA-granting colleges, as half of them made such purchases, compared to just 27.27 percent of community colleges and 28.57 percent of PhD-granting colleges and research universities in the sample.
  • Student workers in the library earned a mean of $8.71/hour. These students work a mean of 11.25 total hours per week in the library. The range is from 5 to 20 hours. The community colleges in the sample have the least number of student workers, although their students put in the most hours, a mean of 14.28 hours per week.
  • For nearly half (45.83 percent) of all survey participants, the library's capital budget has declined over the past two years. 37.5 percent of participants report that it has remained the same.
  • We asked the sample how they will fare against other units of their college in terms of allocation of funding for new positions and other labor resources. 50 percent of libraries sampled expect to "keep pace with other college departments," while 11 libraries (45.83 percent) expect to "do worse than other departments."
