Nearly four times as many private than public college students play college sports, according to a new study from Primary Research Group, The Survey of American College Students: Use of College Athletic Facilities.  The report  presents data from a survey of 400+ randomly selected American college students about their use of and satisfaction with college athletic facilities  such as gyms, athletic fields, swimming pools, locker rooms, weights & exercise equipment and sauna and steam facilities.

Just a few of the many findings of the report are:

8.4% of the students in the sample participate in a college sports team.

Nearly four times as many private than public college students played college sports.

An astounding 26.92% of students at colleges with fewer than 2,000 full time equivalent students play college sports while only 2.2% of students at colleges with more than 25,000 students do so.

22.47% of the students in the sample participate in intramural athletics, including more than 28% of students aged 19 or younger but only 4% of students over age 30.

Older students were far more likely than younger ones to turn to a newspaper; more than 13% of students over 30 turned to a newspaper while only a shade more than 3% of students aged 20-21 did so.

5.58% said that they went daily to the college gym.

More than 47% of students who describe themselves as “very left wing” never go to the gym while only 18.75% of students who consider themselves “middle of the road” politically never go.

Close to 30% of students at colleges with less than 2,000 students were dissatisfied with the college paying fields.

A third of students in families with incomes of between $75,000 and $150,000 are dissatisfied with their athletic locker rooms at college

The report is a valuable guide for college directors of athletic facilities or for others who manage, construct or market college athletic centers and programs.  The report is available in PDF or print format for $119.00.
