This report is based on a survey of more than 80 colleges regarding their assessement practices of both faculty and students. The study gives detailed data on the percentage of colleges and academic departments with asessment offices or assessment plans, what those offices and officers do and how well they are funded. The study looks at the use of outside assessment consultants, "Assessment Days," critical faculty-assessment office relations, assessment budgets and strategies, the use of student evaluations of faculty, of student evaluations of academic programs, and other means for assessing both students, faculty and indeed, overall institutional educational effectiveness.
Just a few of the many findings from this 99-page report are:
- An
annual "Assessment Day" or assessment
workshop/seminar geared toward faculty and staff is offered
at 28.77% of the institutions surveyed
- 69.86% of the colleges maintain at least one center whose purpose is to develop faculty teaching skills
- The smallest schools spent the most annually, per
student, on assessment office budgets: including salaries and
overhead, schools with fewer than 2,500 students spent
$169.17/student in this department
- 58.21% of the survey participants say the student
faculty assessment quesionnaires don't have much of an effect
on merit pay increases for instructors
- Only 3.37% of all the colleges sampled use the assessment software package ASSET, while 22.47% use COMPASS (including 57.89% of community colleges)
