This 100+ page report looks closely at how public, academic, and special libraries train their employees. It gives detailed data on spending on training, and on how libraries prioritize spending on training. The report helps to answer questions such as: how many libraries and what type of libraries have specific training budgets and training directors? Do they conduct internal courses? Send employees to external courses? Use library science schools? Do they reimburse employees for library science courses taken at universities? How much do they spend on internal courses, external courses, or library science schools? Who oversees training? Which areas receive the most training support? Technical services? Just a few of the many findings from this report are:
- 42.86 percent of public libraries in the sample hire external instructors to teach courses in-house, as opposed to just 19.05 percent of academic libraries
- Libraries in the sample spent a mean of $4,631.88 in the last year to send employees out to external training courses
- 82.93 percent of all libraries surveyed issue formal appraisal forms to be filled out by supervisors assessing the employees they supervise
- 72.73 percent of libraries with more than 100 FTE employees have instituted a Learning 2.0 program or similar program to encourage employees to learn about new web technologies, well above the overall sample average of 39.02 percent
- Libraries in the sample spent a mean of $637.97 in the last year on internet-based training courses
