Primary Research Group has published The Survey of Distance Learning Programs in Higher Education, 2012-13 Edition, ISBN 1-57440-204-8.

This 165-page report explores the practices and habits of the distance learning programs of more than 50 higher education institutions in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. Total annual revenue figures are given as well as percentage changes in revenue over the past two years and expected changes moving forward. The report examines the assessment efforts of these programs while providing statistics on tuition, enrollment, retention rates, and faculty compensation. Particular focus is given to emerging trends in marketing and advertising and overall spending in these areas. With over 400 tables, and data broken out by country, type of college, total student enrollment, private or public status, and number of courses offered, end users can gauge how their distance learning programs size up against a wide array of programs both big and small.

Just a few of the many findings from this report are:

  • Enrollment in distance learning programs has increased by approximately 5.8 percent in the last year
  • Public colleges made a mean of $1.8 million in total annual revenue for distance learning programs, while private colleges have made a mean of $6.6 million
  • Just 13.33 percent of 4-year colleges in the sample make work study positions available to distance learning students, as compared to 76.47 percent of junior and community colleges
  • Colleges in the United States sent out a mean of 149,817 pieces of mail in the past year to market distance learning programs
  • 42.5 percent of distance learning programs in the sample will not advertise on Facebook in the next year
  • Survey participants estimate that a mean of 42.07 percent of distance learning courses in their college are taught by adjunct faculty
  • 21.74 percent of colleges in the sample offer some form of tuition reduction, rebate, or grant to more than half of the students taking distance learning courses
