The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms: Hours Worked on Weekends, Holidays and Vacations

Print:$98.00

The study presents data about hours worked on weekends, holidays and vacations from a survey of 260 American lawyers at 120 law firms. The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: How many billable hours do lawyers work on Saturdays and Sundays? On Christmas Eve or on Thanksgiving or Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving? What percentage of billable hours are accounted for by work on weekends? How long are the vacations that lawyers take and do they work on vacations? If so, how much?

Data in the report is also broken out by size of law firm, legal specialty of the practitioner, age, gender and other variables that make benchmarking easier. Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • Overall, women billed out more hours than men on weekends, a cumulative mean of 3.23 hours vs. 2.76 hours for men.
  • The youngest lawyers tended to work most on Thanksgiving and lawyers under age 30 logged 0.95 billable hours on the last Thanksgiving.
  • Lawyers aged 50-59 logged billable hours on 37% of Saturdays in the past year.
